Top 5 Self-Defence Moves If You're Attacked on Holiday

Whether you're exploring a bustling city, relaxing on the beach or enjoying the nightlife abroad, holidays should be memorable for the right reasons. While most trips pass without incident, it's worth knowing a few simple self-defence techniques that could help you escape if you ever find yourself in danger.

The primary goal of self-defence is not to win a fight—it is to create an opportunity to get away safely. These five simple techniques require very little strength and can be effective for people of all ages.

1. The Palm Heel Strike

If an attacker is directly in front of you and blocking your escape, one of the simplest techniques is a forceful palm strike using the heel of your hand. Unlike punching with a closed fist, striking with the palm reduces the risk of injuring your own hand. Aim to create enough space to break free and run. This movement is natural, powerful and easy to learn, making it one of the first techniques taught in many self-defence classes.

2. Break a Wrist Grab

If someone grabs your wrist, avoid trying to pull directly away from their grip. Instead, rotate your wrist towards the weakest part of the grip—where the thumb and fingers meet—while pulling your arm back sharply. This uses leverage rather than strength and often allows you to escape surprisingly easily. Once free, move away immediately and seek help.

3. Escape a Bear Hug

If someone grabs you from behind, stay calm. Lower your centre of gravity by bending your knees, making it harder to lift or control you. Use your body weight to create space and look for the opportunity to turn and escape. Your priority is to break free rather than remain engaged with the attacker.

4. Protect Yourself on the Ground

If you fall to the ground, do not stay flat. Keep your legs between yourself and the attacker, using your feet to maintain distance while looking for the first safe opportunity to stand up and escape. Many people instinctively try to stand immediately, but creating space first greatly increases your chances of getting away safely.

5. Use Your Voice

One of the most effective self-defence tools is one you always carry with you. Shout loudly and confidently using simple commands such as:

"STOP!"

"BACK OFF!"

"HELP!"

Drawing attention to the situation often causes attackers to flee and alerts nearby people who may be able to assist. Confidence and volume can sometimes prevent a situation from escalating.

Prevention Is Your Best Defence

The safest self-defence is avoiding dangerous situations altogether. When travelling:

  • Stay aware of your surroundings rather than staring at your phone.
  • Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Walk confidently and purposefully.
  • Avoid isolated areas, particularly at night.
  • Let someone know where you are going if travelling alone.
  • Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, leave immediately.

You don't need years of martial arts training to improve your personal safety. Learning a handful of simple escape techniques, staying alert and remaining calm under pressure can make a significant difference. Remember that the objective is always to create an opportunity to escape, find other people and contact the local emergency services. Your safety is far more important than your belongings, and avoiding prolonged confrontation is almost always the safest course of action.
