Boron: the trace mineral for free testosterone and hormone balance
Boron is an essential dietary trace mineral (element 5, atomic mass 10.81) that most people under-consume — typical diets supply only 1–1.5 mg per day. At supplemental doses it behaves as a natural hormone optimiser, with a small but consistent body of human research behind its effects on free testosterone, estrogen and inflammation.
Mechanism of action: freeing bound testosterone
Most of the testosterone circulating in your blood isn't actually available to your tissues — roughly 60% is bound to a carrier protein called sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which takes it out of active circulation. Only the "free" fraction can enter cells and act. Boron's signature effect is to lower SHBG, releasing more free, bioavailable testosterone without needing to increase total production. In parallel it lowers estradiol (a form of estrogen) and reduces inflammatory signalling (Naghii et al., 2011; Pizzorno, 2015).
The pathway can be summarised as: boron → ↓ SHBG → ↑ free testosterone, ↓ estradiol and ↓ inflammatory markers.
What the research shows
In the most-cited trial, healthy men took 10 mg of boron per day for one week. The results were significant on several fronts (Naghii et al., 2011):
- Free testosterone rose ~28%, from an average of 11.83 to 15.18 pg/mL.
- Estradiol fell ~39%, from 42.33 to 25.81 pg/mL.
- Inflammation dropped sharply — high-sensitivity CRP fell by roughly half, with reductions also seen in IL-6 and TNF-α.
Boron additionally supports vitamin-D status and bone health by influencing calcium and magnesium metabolism and the activity of vitamin D (Nielsen, 2014; Rondanelli et al., 2020), and earlier work found dietary boron raised both estradiol and testosterone in postmenopausal women (Nielsen et al., 1987).
