When you sweat heavily during training or intense cardio, you’re losing more than just water. Electrolytes – minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium – are crucial for hydration, muscle function, and performance. While commercial sports drinks are convenient, they often contain unnecessary sugars, colourings, and chemicals.
Here’s how to make your own clean, cost-effective electrolyte drink at home to fuel your workouts and recovery efficiently.
Ingredients (1 litre drink):
1 litre (1000ml) of filtered water or coconut water (for natural potassium)
¼ teaspoon of sea salt or Himalayan pink salt (sodium and trace minerals)
½ teaspoon of potassium chloride (optional, for example ‘LoSalt’ or ‘Nu-Salt’ brands)
Juice of 1 lemon or lime (vitamin C and flavour)
1-2 tablespoons of honey or pure maple syrup (natural glucose for energy)
Optional: a pinch of magnesium citrate powder (if you sweat heavily)
Pour 1 litre of water or coconut water into a jug.
Add the salt, potassium chloride (if using), and lemon or lime juice.
Stir in the honey or maple syrup until dissolved.
Mix thoroughly and refrigerate if desired.
