As well as a chef and personal trainer, ex-Dreamboys dancer Luke Baker has been a fitness model for many years and knows a thing or two about staying lean all year round. He is known for his chiselled abs and has helped many people achieve their dream look with his expert advice and knowledge. Try and implement some of Luke’s key tips to getting and staying lean and shredded.

STAY ACTIVE

Too many people are living sedentary lives and even those who train most days feel that their workouts are enough to help them achieve their goals. Your lifestyle is the most important part in achieving results and that includes being as active as possible. It’s great if you work out regularly but build on that with regular exercise outside of your workouts, which can include going for short walks and standing up regularly.

TRAIN ABS AND CORE REGULARLY

Your abs are unique because they can take more of a beating than any other part of the body. Since your core is so heavily utilised in your daily physical functioning, it can handle more than you think. If doing ab-specific work it can take around 3 sessions per week with a day in between for rest, but no more than 10 minutes with no rest periods. Core work can be done every day if incorporating core exercises into your workouts or aim for three to five times a week.

WATCH OUT FOR HIDDEN CALORIES

Everything we eat nowadays can contain things that will sabotage your diet. Sauces, salad dressings, you name it, can all include sugars among other things that will add up your daily calories and cause havoc to your plans. Check the labels of everything you eat so that you know exactly what you’re putting into your body so there’s no nasty surprises later.

RESTRICT SUGAR INTAKE

Most people eat sugar excessively in today's world. The reason sugar causes fat storage so fast is because it is a simple carbohydrate which digests very quickly. Excess sugar in the bloodstream is unhealthy so the body immediately stores it as fat. Excess sugar can be catabolic to the muscle and cause fat accumulation and lack of energy. Sugar should be limited to sources from your balanced diet such as your complex carbs, fruit etc.

EAT MORE SOLUBLE FIBRE

Soluble fibre is a powerful natural appetite suppressant. By suppressing your appetite, you will feel fuller for longer and are more likely to reduce your calorie intake. Foods containing high levels of soluble fibre include glucomannan, which can be found in LA Muscle’s Thermoxen, as well as dried beans, oats, oat bran, rice bran, barley, citrus fruits, apples, strawberries, peas, and potatoes.
