The main objective to improving our health and fitness is to essentially live longer and better. By working on different aspects of this, we can achieve our long-term goals of living longer and fuller lives by staying healthy and active.

These tips might seem obvious, but apart from any serious illness, disease or accident occurs, should all be followed daily to ensure you stay as healthy as possible and live a long and fulfilled life. A study published last year in the journal Circulation has listed the 5 following factors as being the biggest contributors to a long and healthy life.

EAT A HEALTHY DIET

Science has long since linked a healthy diet to longevity. A healthy balanced diet will include many sources of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and healthy fats. Foods that should be removed from your diet include processed snacks and meats, fried foods and sugar. Unhealthy food options have been linked to higher risks of chronic disease and death.

EXERCISE REGULARLY

Regular exercise is not only improves your physical health but also your mental health. Anything from cardiovascular fitness to mood is greatly benefited. You should aim to workout a minimum of 3-4 times per week. This can be anything from weightlifting to walking. If you’re not really into exercise then you can also take part a sport you like such as football, tennis or swimming. Apart from exercise you should aim to be active, stand and move for at least 30 minutes per day.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY BODY WEIGHT

It’s no secret that being overweight can cause all kinds of health issues. Regulating your body weight is one of the best ways to help improve your overall health and will make day to day activities a lot less taxing on your body. Check online for your optimal weight, this will be based on your height, age etc and will give you a guideline of what to aim for.

ONLY DRINK ALCOHOL IN MODERATION

It’s well known that alcohol is bad for you. Despite this, people do drink regularly and the best way to minimise health issues as a result of drinking alcohol, is to moderate intake of it. Save it for the weekend and even then, only a few drinks. Excess drinking and binges can be extremely bad for the body and over time can cause many illnesses and diseases.

DO NOT SMOKE

Smoking is a leading cause of serious health problems including being known to cause lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes and mouth and throat cancers, which make it a significant threat to longevity. The best way to reduce your risk is to of course never smoke at all, but if you do, it’s highly recommended to quit as soon as possible to minimize threats to your health.
