The Double Cheeseburger

A Healthy Big Mac Alternative

This recipe is the perfect way to treat yourself to a double cheeseburger without the guilt. Why wait until the weekend when you can have this healthy alternative that's twice as enjoyable as it's fast-food option!

INGREDIENTS

The burger and bun:

  • 200g ground beef (5% fat), made into patties
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • 1 wholemeal/brown seeded bun
  • 4 slices dill pickle
  • 1-2 large slices tomato
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese

For the sauce:

  • 1 tbsp ketchup (low sugar & salt)
  • 1/2 tbsp mayonnaise (light) or 1 tbsp French mustard

Tip: Add a few slices of bacon to make it a bacon double cheeseburger!

Yields 1 serving

DIRECTIONS

  • Pre-heat oven to 375°F/190°C/170°C Fan.
  • Assuming the beef has already been seasoned and formed into patties but them on a non-stick baking tray and cook on both sides for 10 mins each side, for a total of 20 mins.
  • During the last 10 minutes fry the onions in a pan until they caramelise.
  • If you like the bun toasted the put it in the oven for 5-6 mins.
  • In a bowl, mix the ketchup and mayonnaise to create the “secret sauce”.
  • The last 2 mins for the burgers add the slices of cheese to slightly melt. Keep an eye on them so they don't completely melt and remove them when ready.
  • Build the burger by placing the bun and then adding all of the ingredients and sauce, topped with the beef patties and top of the bun.
  • It's now ready to enjoy!
