New research seems to be ringing alarm bells for men and women across the UK. The research by the British Heart Foundation has found that 48 per cent of women and 42 per cent of men confess to feeling so unfit that they would get short of breath if they had to run to catch a bus.
The survey also found 47 per cent of people felt that they could run up to just half a mile at best, while one in five people saying they could only manage 100 metres!
The survey of 2000 adults also showed those who claimed to run a mile had not done so by as much as a decade ago! This research is worrying particularly with regards to the health of people’s heart and their general circulation.
According to statistics, around 61.7 per cent of adults in the UK are overweight or obese (65.3 per cent of men and 58.1 per cent of women); this according to Public Health England. The proportion of men and women who are obese is roughly equal at 36 per cent, that is just over 1 in 3.
Are you one of these unfit people? What can you do about it? There may be several reasons why you have not got yourself fit over the years. The good news is that it is never too late.
Start with a regime of moderate activity such as fast walking and do it up to a speed and a time you feel comfortable with. Try and increase the intensity and duration weekly until you are doing a solid 45-60 minutes at least 2-3 times a week.
Stamina and endurance is all about getting started and then persisting and making sure that you increase duration and intensity. The more you can extend things, the more stamina you will build. If you find it hard to exercise for long or you run out of energy, include more carbohydrates in your diet, such as pasta or rice. You can also supplement with a Creatine supplement such as Explosive Creatine to increase energy and endurance.
