I am moody and I moan. I know it but can’t help it. Help!

There is nothing worse than a moody, moany person. We are not born in a bad mood or born moaners; these are things which get acquired as time goes by.

Let's break it down a little. Moaning is a trait which many people acquire and either they are not aware of it or they are aware of it and just don't want to shake it off; it becomes part of them. Moaning makes some people feel better.

If you are a moaner, then take a tape recorder and record your conversations throughout the day. Listen back to them later and try to be critical as a third party. See where you moan and why and try and remember to break this pattern.

Moodiness is harder to deal with. Here are the reasons and what you can do:

  1. Lack of sleep: many people don't realize it but lack of sleep is a big reason why you do not feel yourself and edgy. Make sure you get adequate sleep at night and see yourself change. Adequate sleep can mean 10 hours or more, if you have been going without good sleep for a while.
  2. Meat: eating a great deal of meat can make you aggressive, angry and moody. If you have been doing this, cut down on meat consumption for a while.
  3. Junk food: one of the major reasons for people's mood swings is junk food. This applies especially for women at the time of their menstrual cycle. Cut out things like chocolate, crisps, pastry and cookies.
  4. Bad diet: not eating enough foods with B vitamins can make you stressed and moody. Up your intake of foods rich in Vitamin B, such as bread.
  5. Salt: can make you hyperventilate.
  6. Blocked nose: if your nose is blocked, you will be breathing through your mouth. This will make you more stressed and aggressive. Try and resolve any blocked-nose issues ASAP!
  7. Stress: this goes without saying, but stress is a great generator of bad mood! Try to learn the art of relaxation and don't take too much on.
  8. Mood-manipulators: certain drugs such as steroids can change your mood for the worse. Beware of their effects and adjust accordingly.
